Greetings to all!
As a total newbie wrt rolling release Linux I've been watching Sidux/Aptosid from the sidelines for a while - and finally downloaded aptosid-2010-02-keres-kde-full, which is now running smoothly in live mode so that I can make my newbie mistakes without borking an installation.
There will be new and (hopefully) more important mistakes to learn from once committed to HDD! 
Yes - it means re-doing all the newly-learned tweaks after installation but that too is part of the learning process - repetition is good, especially with my fading memory.
The single most apparent unusual element to one used to BSD 4.2+, Bourne shell, *buntu, Mint, SliTaz etc was 'sux', so some research was in order, and I thought I'd share the results with other newcomers arriving at Aptosid.

Thinking on it, that explains some funnies that we have had with our many *buntu and derivative installations.

PS The long term objective is to assess the viability of migrating our many 'less technical' friends and relations from their *buntu/Mint LTS installations to something stable enough for them that just rolls along. They all used to be on Win, but I couldn't keep up with the maintenance.

Many people have feeling that 'sux' is sidux/aptosid specific, but it's from debian's repo
basic info by 'apt-cache show sux'

@muchan - thanks for that! Yes, the Debian heritage is there, no doubt of that - but I had not followed up Francois Gouget's details on the man page. His web page is indeed interesting, with (amongst others) a page on wine - no, not the bottled sort - and another piece of software called 'bing' dating from 1999, that runs in Windows. <grin>
@bfcb - thank you and yes indeed!
All that really matters is that we have a sound method of asserting root authority to make changes without having (eg) to scratch around with chown/chmod before the user logon can use the changes. Recall having 'fun' with that on various Win flavours over the years, when trying without much success to avoid being an administrator permanently.

PS - and at http://fgouget.free.fr/bing/index-en.shtml near the bottom, I have just spotted a utility called 'su' - for Windows! Would have saved me a lot of hassle with Win 98, I can tell you! |
