It seems that Sid is transitioning to Plasma 5.6 (and other related parts are also being updated). Although it's been quiet here, I've been seeing some packages to be removed...

I've seen some discussion on the Siduction (which also follows Sid) forum here: http://forum.siduction.org/index.php?topic=6224.0

I've already seen some small problems with my last update a while ago, although I am not sure it is related, but my Emacs launch icon became invisible (it's still there, but I can only see the space between other icons) and in Konsole the cursor seems to appear in the wrong place. (The fix for this last one was to change the font.)

I tried a DU in a virtual machine, and had some problems, like the window decorations (and borders) would not appear and some "black boxes" where menus and other things should appear. But this virtual machine did have some problems before (it is hard to do a new install with the old installation ISOs), so maybe is also not related. (Some, in the Siduction discussion, seem to have DUed with no problems.)

Due to work responsibilities, I will not be able to do a full DU until mid July, so I likely won't be able to report on the progress here, but hopefully someone will.

Anyway, just a heads up.

OK, I tried the update in my laptop and everything seems to be working well. Some meta packages were removed (kde-complete, I think...) and a lib that was updated to newer version. I haven't had much time working with it, but so far so good. I am not sure if it was necessary, but I've installed "plasma-integration".

Maybe I will wait a little longer to mark as solved, but it does seem that all is safe do DU.

kde-l10n-* is still missing, while not a killer, it's something to be aware of.

Not so lucky here. Did dist-upgrade today without errors, but plasma-desktop removed and not upgraded. I can login in a sort of kde desktop with no plasma Sad .
Trying to install plasma-desktop, system says this:
      Code:
sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
plasma-desktop : Depends: kactivitymanagerd but it is not going to be installed

Trying to install kactivitymanagerd:
      Code:
sudo apt-get install kactivitymanagerd
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  akregator k3b kactivities kaddressbook kde-runtime kdepim-runtime kmail
  knotes korganizer ksnapshot libcalendarsupport4 libeventviews4
  libincidenceeditorsng4 libkactivities-bin libkactivities6 libkdepim4
  libkdepimdbusinterfaces4 libkleo4 libksieveui4 libmailcommon4
  libmailimporter4 libmessagecomposer4 libmessagecore4 libmessagelist4
  libmessageviewer4 libnoteshared4 libpimcommon4 libtemplateparser4 okular
  soundkonverter
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  kactivitymanagerd
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 30 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Stopped here, not sure make sense go on ...
Any hint how to unlock this situation ?
Thanks

Noted in addition that the issue could be plasma-desktop-data, that stayed at older version
      Code:
 apt-cache policy plasma-desktop-data
plasma-desktop-data:
  Installed: 4:5.4.3-1
  Candidate: 4:5.6.4-2
  Version table:
     4:5.6.4-2 500
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian sid/main amd64 Packages
 *** 4:5.4.3-1 100
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

plasma-desktop is needed and installable, just remove "everything" (with a little care, of course) in its way.

OK worked - needed to remove and to add some packages, but nothing so complex .

Wow, kde 5.6.4 seems very nice and responsiveness.

It's not working for me, though...
Relied on your post and let parts of kde disappear, but now I ended up in a situation where plasma-desktop can not be installed Sad
My attempt ended up in the need to install qtbase-abi-5-5-1, but apt resists do install that.
On the other hand I read that this should be part of libqt5core5a which is installed.

I'm kind of helpless now - anyone having a clue?

The problem simply is that you waited too long, yesterday afternoon the qt5 transition for 5.5.1-->5.6.1 started - making all packages depending on qt5 uninstallable until it has finished.

The qt5 transition should be through now, at least on amd64, so you can now try to reinstall plasma-desktop.

Thank you. Managed to reinstall plasma-desktop now, but something must be missing now as I'm not able to maximize items like the control bar or the application windows. What am I missing?

You could try to install either kde-full or kde-standard, as they should pull all you need. (Or do is with the option -s to simulate and see what packages seem important that you are missing.) Just a thought.

Decided to install kde-standard, which really drew a number of packages. Yet, the problem isn't solved...I still can't maximize or background/foreground windows and the task bar is still only about a fifth of the total screen width and the option "maximize task bar" is ignored.
Must have lost an important packet when I dist-upgraded yesterday. Anything else you'd recommend?

You could take a look at /var/log/dpkg.log and see what was removed during the failed DU.
