After a DU today I have no GUI. The xserver starts goes to a black screen. If I startx logged in as a user it starts then dies. this is a Nvidia GF116 GTX 550 Ti card. I tried the Nvidia and NOUVEAU drivers. The old kernel I have is very old 3.18 and it won't working with the updated xorg version.

any ideas as to what I can try? Thanks

Maybe you should post the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log...

More info, when booting the system the xserver does not die. there is an X cursor visable and movable.

systemctl shows that kdm is running
      Quote:
kdm.service loaded active exited LSB: X display manager for KDE

But no kwin

Kwin-x11 is installed
      Quote:
kwin-x11:
Installed: 4:5.4.3-1.1

Trying to start kwin I get this
      Quote:
systemctl start kwin-x11
Failed to start kwin-x11.service: Unit kwin-x11.service failed to load: No such file or directory.

OK, I removed KDM form /etc/rc5.d, sddm was in there, and rebooted. It still started with a black screen on vt7, swithed to vt3 and login as my user and entered startx and I now have a desktop, so thanks for the hint.

Now I have to figure out why it doesn't start on boot. This is a workstation so doesn't get rebooted that offen.

Maybe it is not enabled. Try:

      Code:

systemctl enable sddm

Or show us

      Code:

systemctl status sddm

So I switched over to lightdm and can now get a log-in screen, but I'm stuck using xfce as the desktop. If I select plasma it does not start and just returns to the log-in screen. Still no KDE

Was he DU you've mentioned in the original post the first in a long time, like your transition to Plasma 5? O had Plasma 5 worked for you before?

Edit: Never mind, rereading your posts, it seems that it is the first upgrade to Plasma 5. My recent upgrade made manually remove some package for me to be able to install some essential package, which I think was plasma-desktop. But, if you could get to a plasma session with "startx", then I don't think that this could be the problem...

You could try to take a look at "/var/log/sddm.log" (or post here) for some hints. Or lightdm one when trying to go to a plasma session.

I found this error in .xsession-errors

      Quote:
kdeinit5: Launched KLauncher, pid = 8406, result = 0
This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "xcb".

I noticed this error when trying to start vlc player in xfce. I installed xcb package but it did not fix the problem.

I looked at the package list again and found: libqt5xcbqpa5 and installed this. Now I have a working KDE desktop.

Thank you for all your help.

I do not use KDE, but was having problem using vlc for somedays, using cvlc without user interface.

Installing this package libqt5xcbqpa5 solved problem. Thank you.

The situation around libqt5xcbqpa5 is still a mess...

Relatively recently, libqt5xcbqpa5 was split out and became only a Recommends instead of a hard dependency. Reasoning of its maintainers is that systems without libqt5xcbqpa5 are conceivable (headless systems (remote access), qt5 on FB (framebuffer, no X.org) or wayland based sessions), but for using qt5 applications on top of X.org (pretty much anything in the wild) it remains to be a hard requirement. Without it being present, you won't be able to log into KDE, nor to start (almost) any qt5 application.

Following Debian policy by the letter, and considering that Debian defaults (contrary to aptosid defaults) do install Recommends by default for a couple of years now, these are valid reasons.

In theory, the newly gained Recommends on libqt5xcbqpa5 should pull it into systems (which do install Recommends by default; so plain Debian, but not aptosid) during upgrades (or fresh installs).

In practice, this doesn't really work in all cases under the premisses depicted above either. So this optimizes for the rare case (running qt based applications without X.org displaying the session), rather than the common ones (actual hardware. no, you can't use wayland to run KDE (as packaged by Debian) yet, neither is KDE in Debian (at all?) packaged to be used for raw FB). So in practice, the only place where you could actually profit from not hard-depending on libqt5xcbqpa5, are very fine tuned systems (embedded-like) with lots of self compiled stuff to actually do something without using X.org as display driver (think qt5 on FB --> embedded systems or development on KDE-on-wayland). And yes, this has caused multiple bugreports, problems and bugs on plain Debian (with a default of installing recommends by default) as well, with more to be expected when stretch becomes stable. So for these reasons, as far as Debian is concerned, this is intended (but fragile and unfortunate) behaviour and formally not a bug.

While vlc isn't a KDE application, it is using qt5 - so it's affected like anything else using qt5 (actually non-KDE systems with just a single qt5 package here and there are even more likely to fall into this trap, because those are less tested paths with less chance for something else to pull in libqt5xcbqpa5 'by accident'.

This is pretty much a pattern of contemporary qt5/ KDE5 packaging in Debian, which has recently started to require pulling in several SONAME dependent (semi-)library packages explicitly (something rather frowned upon in general), rather than relying on library dependencies (of the packages that actually needs them in all but the most unlikely/ artificial environments). If you don't, things will crash and 'burn'.

For reasons like this one, dist-upgrading a KDE system from KDE4 to KDE5 (yes, this affects Debian jessie --> stretch~ just the same) needs special handholding, if you are looking for a functional system afterwards. I hope that some of these quirks will get solved over time, but several of the known pitfalls are currently still classified as not-a-bug (which, again, is correct in the strictest interpretation of the letter of Debian policy, just very -imho too- fragile).
