A couple of weeks ago, an AF32 bluetooth headset with built in microphone connected fine in HSP mode allowing use of the headset for calls. Now, after some upgrades, it only connects in High Fidelity Playback A2DP mode, meaning I can't use it for two-way communication. I think two weeks ago I was using an earlier 3.17 kernel like 3.17-0.slh.2-aptosid-amd64 and I've had this issue since kernels 3.17-1.slh.3-aptosid-amd64 and 3.17-1.slh.4-aptosid-amd64. Another thing that has changed is when I connect to the headset, it's not available until I restart KDE.

The HSP profile is all of a sudden no longer available:
      Code:
$ pactl list cards

Are you 100% confident that 3.17-1.slh.3-aptosid-amd64 already exposes the problem? The first bluetooth related -stable patches in the 3.17.x series were added to 3.17-1.slh.4-aptosid-amd64 (and those aren't exactly suspicious either), so (while of course not impossible) it's rather unlikely that 3.17-1.slh.3-aptosid-amd64 is affected.

If you still have older kernels installed, please make sure that the problem doesn't occur now with those as well, which would hint at userspace regressions rather than kernel problems.

Yes, I'm sure that I first noticed the problem with kernel 3.17-1.slh.3-aptosid-amd64. I would have liked to test with an earlier kernel, but unfortunately I had just purged a couple of earlier 3.17 kernels and now only have a 3.11-4 kernel to try, which I will do once I get back to that computer. Based on what you say, it's looking like it could be a userspace regression. I'm also having trouble with Bluez tools as can be seen above and some Bluez tools like bt-audio and bt-monitor have been removed from the package in recent months.

The problem seems to be Bluez5, which has dropped support for the HSP and HFP profiles.

HSP/HFP profiles now work again for me with this device.

      Code:
$ pactl list cards

                device.api = "bluez"
                device.class = "sound"
                device.bus = "bluetooth"
                device.form_factor = "headset"
                bluez.path = "/org/bluez/hci0/dev_02_00_01_00_02_00"
                bluez.class = "0x240404"
                bluez.alias = "AF32"
                device.icon_name = "audio-headset-bluetooth"
                device.intended_roles = "phone"
        Profiles:
