Post subject: [solved] hdd install with usb stick?

I need to install aptosid to hard drive on a computer that has no optical drives, and my only alternative is to install the ISO with a USB stick.
Can this be done and how? |

thank you luis....anyway....I set the BIOS to boot from usb drive and after hitting 'default' in menu, system boots for about 10 seconds and stops at:
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) _
Can someone please help me with this? |

Kind of old thread
First thing I would try, is to re-download the iso.
It "could" have been just a bad download
If it happens again with the new download, we need to see some specs
How old is the USB stick ?
Have you tried booting an older version or another distro from the stick itself ? |

Ok, we can rule out the usb stick with the aptosid ISO. It booted to fully functional desktop on another computer.
I will attempt to copy the last 6 or 7 lines of text from computer I want to install on & maybe it will provide some kind of clue(s).
Waiting for up to 30s for devices to settle . . .

The fact that the ohci_hcd appears at 33 seconds, a little after the script has given up after it's 30 second delay suggests the usb is simply very slow to come to life on this machine. You could try first simply waiting a while (say 30 seconds) at the boot screen before hitting enter to start it trying to boot. You can also try adding "debug=fll-premount" to the boot command line and then waiting there for the roughly 30 seconds when it stops and puts you in the initramfs shell (like when it is failing, but you won't see the "Waiting for up to 30s" message first for example), or you could wait until you see the ohci_hcd message there. Once you have waited at the shell after the debug=fll-premount you can simply enter "exit" to have it return to continue to try and boot.
Assuming either of these work it will let you at least carry on and install normally and hopefully that should be an end to your problems.
If they don't work then you are stuck with trying to netboot, or using another OS to prepare a boot from the hd perhaps with fromiso (or removing the hard disk to attach it to another computer).
And another idea that just occurred to me, try the different usb ports you have available, it just may be that internal usb hubs or something are causing the long delay and some other port might behave better. |

| Or now I think of it, if you can put a copy of the iso on the internal drive (somewhere which won't get in the way when you want to install, or use toram if you have enough ram so it frees up the hard drive) then you can boot from the usb stick still and add a fromiso cheatcode to the command line to get it to use the iso on the internal disk. |

Ok, I'm having a new problem similar . .
I want to install aptosid amd64 kde-lite from DVD on a new rig and it WILL NOT let me.
Installation begins normally from DVD and I enter “aptosid amd64 (3.9-0.slh.4-aptosid-amd64)”. Text sequence begins & stops completely at:
BusyBox v1.20.2 (Debian 1:1.20.0- built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)
. . . and stays there.
aptosid amd64 kde-lite DVD is good; it worked perfectly on another computer.
New rig is good; it installed XP w/no problems.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong. |

The previous advice would apply again (as would trying from usb stick).
Or paste (take a photo if you have to) of the rest of the screen so we can see the messages before the Busybox v1.20.2 line which might have a clue why it's failing to find/recognise the dvd.
Also enter "cat /proc/cmdline" at the (initramfs) prompt and report what it says in reply. |

computer is unresponsive to keyboard & i must power off by holding power button until it shuts off. |

. . oops . . i forgot to post back . .
i don't know if it was the usb drive that was screwey loowey or ME! . . but i zero-wrote the usb with 'active killdisk', formatted it fat32 and copied the .iso to the usb with 'unetbootin' and it installed smoothly on all my rigs. |

cat'ing on the device should really be enough. Its what I do for a long time now and just did a few hours ago. Works flawless. No need for any special tools you would have to install from somewhere.
If its a UEFI system you want to install on, follow this advice instead: http://manual.aptosid.com/en/hd-install-en.htm#efi-usb (worked for the machine I am typing this on) |
