Hello
I'm a very very newbie linux user. I just wanted to tell the developers I'd like aptosid meded (at least a bit) more user.friendly.
For example, I was not able to configure my wi fi connection usin the tool(s) included in the distro. There was one named "wpa_supplicant" that acted via terminal.
But probably I'm wrong?
I feel more comfortabe with network manager.
So any chanches that NM will be included in the next aptosid's snapshot?
Thanks |

There is a tool for configuring, in particular - but not only, wlan interfaces, it's called Ceni and located in the Network/Internet menu; network-manager will not be added anytime soon. |

I think network manager will be part of the next debian release (18 moths at least). I don't have any source. Till than, CENI is really wonderful, thanks sidux-aptosid devs for that! |

Whatever "part of" means… Its included in the archive and some desktop environments will bring it in by default, but i guess they already do so now.
The problem with NM is that it is not a one size fits all application. It's quiet the opposite: So many people have very different opinions on it. Just look into the last time it was discussed in debian:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/20 ... 00051.html
The thread has the lovely title "network-manager as default? No!" btw and is hugh…
All in all we have a well-tested and well-documented way to setup network and we have with kelmo "the master of wpa_disaster (and co)" here, so it would be just dumb to switch to a less tested, less documented and as fewer dev's have experience with it even less supportable application… |

anyway, i can see in my magic crystal ball that nm will be a default in debian system in the future. I believe it will get stronger (at least, it did in the past years), stable and documented. I think it will increase usability in the linux word as it does on ubuntu. A unified interface to dominate (in the darkness?) all kinda network interfaces from wired to 3g will be a great step forward. It's planned by Iluvatar!
Anyway, dolknut and slh are right, in the REAL present Ceni and all the goods aptosid offers are THE BEST in the linux world right now. |

adding my salt...
Ceni is very easy to use and efficient, but may be deconcerting for non experienced users for two reasons that may (may be ?) be considered :
1/ ceni is not very verbose about a missing driver for some wlan interfaces for wich drivers have to be installed first (so installing aptosid-scripts via apt-get and running fw-detect is mandatory)
2/ when adding a wpa key the paste function is not handy
this said i use ceni each time i boot a new live aptosid on a laptop
and it's ok, even if not excellent and a bit messy.
