Because I'm bored stupid? Dunno.

My impression was the devil started this poll in order to find out if the aptosid kernel should still support Nvidia.
Almost everybody says "I would use an alternative if there was a working one, BUT there isn't so please keep it in or at least give us a choice". Since that didn't happen ... whats the point?
(See above) I am sure I missed the original point. For me, I am glad that the free driver works. That said, for something as critical as a proper video driver, I agree that the non-free version should remain until a (massively) reasonable alternative exists. Perhaps nouveau will work for all some day. Until then, nv should remain.
I have a similar situation with the driver for my wireless PCMCIA but I can still connect via ethernet so it is not as critical that my card is not supported. I have to manually rebuild the kernel with every upgrade to get my wireless working again. Not a major hassle but a feature I could live without. |

my intention was to show a user-pattern. it came out as i expected. i was blamed, that this was due to the subjective way i posted the questions. i dont think so, but i could not care less.
nv is no choice unfortunately because debian removed it. nouveau works for some, not for others.
the aptosid kernel could have kept the remaining parts of BKL in until 2.6.39, when they get removed for good afaik. that didnt happen.
so, from my point of view, this poll is finished. thanks very much for participating.
i wish, anyone would care for the outcome.

So do I understand that right that the problem could have been avoided till 2.6.39?
That could have been just enough time to post a few sentences in the NEWS section to warn Nvidia user.
And by the way I have not one computer with a Nvidia card, so I am not effected. |

AMD/ATI or Intel? |

As I said above, nvidia appears to have removed the offending line and I've installed nvidia 270.41.03 in 2.6.38-3.slh.4 |

@DeepDayze AMD and intel.
@drb I am not searching for a solution because I don't need it. And that was not the question of the poll.
All I am saying is there was a "vote" all said "yes please" and we got a "NO" (actually we didn't even get that) ... but anyway no need to vote anymore! |

Time has moved on and 'yes please' is not required. No hacks, it just installs. |

• Do you need the nvidia driver for private use?
It is not really essential.
• Do you need the nvidia driver for your job?
Indeed, I need 3D acceleration, 3D display and CUDA.
• Would at this point the 'nouveau' driver be a solution for you instead of 'nvidia'?
Not yet.
• Does the fact that the 'nvidia' driver is not free, mean anything to you?
Yes, of course. I would rather prefer having a free open-source driver. |

Thanks for asking...
The nvidia driver is still required for me because I use the TV-Out capability of my 8500GT card, and this is not supported by nouveau on this card. When I bought this card (several years ago), I did my best to find one that had the features I wanted while being as linux-friendly as possible. I previously used ATI and had no end of trouble with their drivers (a situation I am told has changed).
Quote:
Does the fact that the 'nvidia' driver is not free, mean anything to you?
Absolutely - I go with open source when at all reasonably possible, but the reality is that hardware options for linux are limited.
As for third party repos, I think using those for something as basic as closed-source video support is undesirable, mainly due to the potential security problems it raises. I do appreciate third party repos - they are as much a contribution as anything else - but I don't think Aptosid users should feel compelled to use them, especially for something as fundamental as the kernel. In that case you are effectively substituting one closed-source solution for another (maybe not strictly speaking, but most people using repos aren't going to check the source, just use the binaries provided).
The reality is that it's hard enough for linux users to get manufacturer support of any kind, so it's not helpful for distros to further narrow the available options, as undesirable to some as they may be. I think flexibility is needed at this point in the manufacturer-linux relationship. IOW don't require users to accept closed-source, but don't prevent them from using it either. I realize that makes the job messier, but until we have cooperative manufacturers, it's sometimes required.
Finally, I would caution Aptosid not to go so far as Ubuntu, where in my experience they often broke nvidia's drivers with their endless patches. When I moved to other distros I realized that the stability problems I had with nvidia's drivers were due to Ubuntu, not Nvidia. The same versions of those drivers on other distros (including Aptosid) worked flawlessly. Ubuntu was also unwilling to fix the problems they created. So I would suggest making minimal patches when absolutely necessary, but beware of changing too much unless you're willing to provide the extensive support required. |

Because of the the X/Nvidia issue today I gave nouveau another try. I admit, it has become better. But alas it still produces graphical glitches in 2D mode (!) with my graphics card (Nvidia GF 8400), e.g. the tooltips in systemsettings don't show correctly and with unacceptable delay. When I activate compositing (OpenGL), it works. I am surprised that also the kwin effects do work. With enabled compositing everything works smoother than without compositing! Interesting... But then I dared to try to play an OpenGL game like Ankh . It is playable in acceptable speed in 1920x1200, yes, but... the screens flickers that much that it nonetheless is not playable without getting headaches after some minutes. So alas nouveou is still not usable for me. But it is a good recommendation for those who just want the transparent panel and the kwin effects and who play games like extremetuxracer... |

• Do you need the nvidia driver for private use?
Surely - nouveau doesn't properly support power management.
• Do you need the nvidia driver for your job?
Not sure - my work doesn't require any 3D acceleration.
• Would at this point the 'nouveau' driver be a solution for you instead of 'nvidia'?
No.
• Does the fact that the 'nvidia' driver is not free, mean anything to you?
Absolutely not. |
