I've been getting some USB errors. If often occurs during boot and slows down the process considerably... But I can also see during sessions with dmesg.

Here are some of them:

      Code:

debian(scrn)[/home/finotti]$ cat /var/log/kern.log | grep usb | grep error

I've tried to trace what was connected to the USB port with lsub. It first was the keyboard, so I plugged an older (non-USB) keyboard, then it was a mouse, so I connected another mouse. But it keeps happening.

Here is the latest.

      Code:

debian(scrn)[/home/finotti]$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 8087:8008 Intel Corp.
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 174c:3074 ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1074 SuperSpeed hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 174c:2074 ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1074 High-Speed hub
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 046d:08d7 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate STX
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c50e Logitech, Inc. Cordless Mouse Receiver
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

If I understand this correctly, it is not showing errors to my new mouse (1-3).

I've tried different ports, but it doesn't help.

Is this a hardware (motherboard) problem? Or software? Any ideas?

I've been having some freezes (not just the panel, as in another thread, but full freezes), and I am not sure it is related, but trying to find errors, these USB errors were all I could find.

Here is some info on the machine:

      Code:

debian(scrn)[/home/finotti]$ infobash -v3

Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

In most cases, these issues are caused by interference and/ or bad USB (extension) cables. Personally I do use USB extension cables (~1.2m, USB 2.0 type A, male to female) in utter disregard of the relevant USB standards myself, in order to get some USB ports on the desk surface and to avoid having to crawl behind the computer for temporary devices connections (e.G. USB sticks), but they are a real cause of trouble (exactly the same kind of error messages you get, device disconnects and data corruption) - not all the time, but way too often.

As a first debugging attempt, I'd suggest to remove the USB hub from the equation first and to connect your devices directly to the back of the system, if that helps (it probably will), you can check the cables to- and from the USB hub and test different (better/ shorter) ones (and there are also quite significant quality differences among USB hubs, not all are problem free). So yes, you are seeing hardware problems, but I'm pretty confident that your computer isn't the faulty party, but 'just' the USB cables and hub(s).

Interesting. I do have two USB extension cables. I will take them out and check. I have no extenal hubs, though. I have one (2.0) that I connected directly to the motherboard and is mounted on the case.

I will give it a try.

Thanks again for the informative reply.

Indeed, removed the internal USB connectors (10 pin, USB 2.0, mounted on the case) fixed the problem (at least so far I've had no errors). I will try to get a different one and see if it works.

Thanks slh for the great support again!
