OK, I'm trying a new install in a virtual machine, and I am having trouble...
My first try was to simply issue the apt command above (that I've cited from slh). I've got a message:
Many issues of "apt-get -f install" and "dpkg --configure -a" did not solve the problem.
Then, I tried to just do update and try to install apt and dpkg before upgrading, but I ran into the same problem. Here is my last attempt:

This is after a clean install, an attempt of "apt-get install dpkg apt", and a few of "apt-get -f install", "depkg --configure -a".
By the way, I'm OK with instructions on how to go from a fresh installation, rather than fix the mess I'm in above.
