In the last month or two, whenever I reboot, the KDM login screen is continuously flickering. It gets stable after restarting the X server, e.g. through the login screen menu option. I haven't seen any other display issues. Last dist-upgraded today at 14:22.

How is your screen connected, VGA, DVI, HDMI, displayport or something else?

When it happens next time, please check your monitor's OSD and look for resolution/ frequencies - compare those values to your expected ones (and what you get after restarting kdm). Another thing to check would be if switching to a tty ([ctrl]+[alt]+[f1], back to [ctrl]-[alt]-[f7]) already influences the results.

The screen is connected via DVI. I'll check the OSD.

I'm having the same issue but with lightdm-gtk-greeter -- with what I suspect is the same xserver restart behavior: logging in then logging out removes the login screen flicker. I'm on a Samsung laptop. I'll try switching to a tty and back on my next reboot.

I just rebooted and switched to a tty at the login screen (Ctrl+Alt+F1). On switching back to the login screen (Ctrl+Alt+F7), I did not see any flickering.

This issue finally disappeared after an upgrade for me, no more flickering login. Switching to a tty and back hadn't stopped the flickering. The monitor's OSD did show unexpected frequencies.
