Is there a hardware discussion on the topic which hardware is best for several tasks (and aptosid of course).
My last buy was a fail.
I am devloping with several programming languages (Lazarus most) and web-site debelopment. Which means I am having an apache server listening and several databases.
Most of the times I have much Open/Libre-Office files opened.
And i am processing images with digikam and other tools.
All these need some Memory. But actually I did the same things some years ago and never experienced a slow (almost dead) system. I am not too much into the hardware stuff and I am aware that i am using the computer probably more heavily than regular users - but i wouldn't expect that I am a power user. |

| Based on your described workload, pretty much anything built in the last 5 years should work (so for good measure, let's say anything starting with 8 GB RAM, dual-core, onboard graphics and up - as usual, the sky is the limit). |

Hi Hy 
In what way was your last buy a fail?
You say you have lots of LibreOffice files open; I love LibreOffice, but sometimes find it a bit slow when dealing with Writer docs which include large image files. Are you using it for programming?
For almost everything to run my company (website HTML, Todo lists, contacts, diary, accounts, studio cabling, song lyrics, etc.) I use plain text files with the wonderful KATE (KDE Advanced Text Editor), which has an awesome feature called Sessions allowing you to group a whole load of text files together as a project. As they're all text files, they are easily portable (and future-proof) and it runs superfast, even with about ten instances of KATE each containing 10-20 text documents. Just a thought in case it's of interest to anyone...  |

Already bought a new computer.

Actually I love kate for plaintext whenever possible. But I have a lot of data in Spreadsheets that I am using heavily.
The Textdocuments with libre-office are just 1 or 2 pages (most of the time) and they contain a logo-image as a header. So, not really a problem.
My last buy was a fail cause the machine shuts down with a thermal failure on a regular basis.
I bought it at a time when we had about 45°C most of the time. So I thought all problems will vanish after the weather will be a little bit cooler.
Now we have about 15°C and it's happening every now and then.
if I restart the computer on a regular basis (instead of sleep when not used) it's getting better. But then I have to reenter a lot of things (passwords and the like) in order to work ... |
