A fresh installation of 3.9-0.slh.4-aptosid-686 from the installation media worked just fine.

After a dist-upgrade involving an upgrade to kernel 3.17-2.slh.4-aptosid-686 the system freezes during boot after (successfull) fschk.
There are no traces in kern.log.

The system still works with the older kernel.

Any hints/ideas on what to try next?

Remove the "quiet" parameter from grub's kernel commandline and you'll probably see where it fails, also wait at least 5 minutes (some timeouts are that long, it might be that it's 'just' one service which delays the boot for 5 minutes).

Unfortunately, turning off quiet mode leaves me with a screen where messages are flying by way too fast to be readable. With the help of a video camera and replaying the video frame by frame, kind of, I can roughly identify the spot in the booting sprocess where the screen goes blank and the netbook freezes (I waited 20 min for it to thaw, it did not:-(

I include the last part of the log of the working 3.9-0.slh.4-aptosid-686 boot process. Within it I have marked the lines with a +-sign that I could also find in the video of the faulty 3.17-2.slh.4-aptosid-686 booting log.

So, the freeze happens after about 13 seconds into the boot process.

Any further ideas?

Eventually, I deleted the newer, non-working kernel to stay with the working 3.9-0.slh.4-aptosid-686 kernel.

Surprisingly then, a subsequent dist-upgrade did not try to upgrade the kernel.

So, everything is fine now, kind of.
