15 Post subject: [SOLVED] Reboot every 5 minutes  PostPosted: 30.12.2012, 21:52

When I boot my system it restarts every 5 minutes. A couple of days ago it only did it once and after that I could work normally but now it happens every 5 minutes after I edited fstab.

I think this has to do with /etc/fstab. This is my current fstab

      Code:
UUID=0b1160fc-12d6-422a-982c-58c9a5443417     /                    ext4      defaults                                                               0   1
UUID=a80f1e4c-ac49-4418-b80f-bd6d633040d5     none                 swap      defaults                                                               0   0
UUID=18cdf5e9-2875-420e-98aa-62d66ceede0e     /home                ext4      defaults                                                        0   2
UUID=8141213f-b686-46bf-87de-85bfefd86de5     /media/disk1part4    ext4      defaults                                                        0   2
UUID=0c390104-8a5d-450c-b2d3-65f16b1936b1     /media/disk2part1    ext4      defaults                                                        0   2
UUID=40bd8302-54e5-4ecd-bde1-eb495c9d7459     /media/disk2part2    ext4      defaults                                                        0   2

sshfs#m@m://home/m                            /media/m_home        fuse      user,allow_other,uid=1000,gid=1000,noauto,fsname=sshfs#m@m://home/m    0   0
sshfs#m@m://media                             /media/m_media       fuse      user,allow_other,uid=1000,gid=1000,noauto,fsname=sshfs#m@m://media     0   0

And this was my old fstab a couple of days ago:

      Code:

UUID=a80f1e4c-ac49-4418-b80f-bd6d633040d5     none                 swap      defaults                                                               0   0
UUID=18cdf5e9-2875-420e-98aa-62d66ceede0e     /home                ext4      auto,users,exec,noatime                                                        0   0

sshfs#m@m://home/m                            /media/m_home        fuse      user,allow_other,uid=1000,gid=1000,noauto,fsname=sshfs#m@m://home/m    0   0

None of those changes 'should' have an effect like that…

However it might help to "touch /forcefsck" as root and reboot, all filesystems will be checked upon that reboot. If this doesn't help (I don't think it will, but it's a good first test), you might see an error message if you leave X and wait for it to happen (hopefully it prints out something on tty), another option might be to temporarly comment out the sshfs mounts (again, I don't expect these to be responsible, but this diverges a bit from the well tested paths). Another useful feature might be to attempt catching error messages via netconsole.

Thank you slh.

The issue is not really solved but the problem is gone now. I called the manufacturer of my computer (ichbinleise.de) and they told me to send it to them so they could check the power supply, the bios and the hard drives (for free). They found nothing and after I hat my machine back the problem was gone.

BTW: After some more minor problems and strange sounds of my harddrive I changed the data cable and had no problems ever since.

Good reminder that sometimes it's a hardware problem. It's always good to open up the box and blow out the dust and make sure all the connections are secure and free of corrosion. Regarding the data cable I've replaced all of mine with ones that have a clip lock.. the ones without a lock may wiggle free at any time.

Yes, a good reminder

Twice a year, usually at the "changing of the clocks" I do my super cleaning, and mid July a good inspection (dust bunnies, cables)
