A recent problem after du (accidentally done in X) consisting of a dark, dark, desktop led me to irc. Thank you again for your attention bfree and ompaul.
For education and entertainment:
1. First suggestion to remove autologin for default user was sufficient, I didn't need to create another user...
2. ... because the other user also couldn't get into kde but could get into fluxbox (just like my normal user as I saw later). For diagnostic purposes, this seems like a thing to test. Whatever the problems were, at least (part of) it was kde related and I got a desktop to work with. Secondly, being able to bring up the login screen gave some confidence that things weren't broken beyond repair.
3. I was able to play a 3d game which suggests advice to replace the nvidia driver for nouveau was premature. I understand the difficulties of providing support for a setup with a proprietary binary blob but perhaps we can think of a simple diagnostic to find out whether the video driver is the culprit before removing it. Glxgears perhaps?
4. Problems seem fixed now and I'm not sure what did it but the most likely solution was dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (alternatively dpkg-reconfigure kdm). The (slightly unsettling) problem with that is that it doesn't give any feedback; it runs and ends without output and I can't tell if it did anything, and if so what. Thank you (ompaul) for pointing me in that direction though. |
