Post subject: How do you keep Gnome 2.32, Gnome-classic?  PostPosted: 26.02.2012, 07:58

Is it possible to install gnome 2.32 with aptosid and maintain it while taking advantage rolling releases on other software.

I've been a happy ubuntu 10.04 LTS user until my packages got blatantly out of date. I like gnome 2.32. NOT a fan of Gnome 3 or Unity. I have ubuntu 11.04 on a netbook which is acceptable to me with gnome classic, but the problem is Ubuntu is most likely to do away with 2.32 in future releases. So if you want to update you repository you will have to loose 2.32.

Basically I want Gnome 2.32 back on my desktop and to never have to reinstall my os. I've tried other window managers and im not a fan.

I am also considering openSUSE 11.4 and running tumbleweed, but I would prefer sticking with apt and synaptic.

This is driving me crazy, I feel a bit homeless right now.

Any thoughts on this?

There is the MATE project: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MATE_(desktop_environment)

This is what I installed on my wife's laptop, along with some customizations from Linux Mint, such as their MintMenu.

You will have to do your own tech support, though -- unless MATE has a forum (to be honest, I'm a bit of a "lone Wolf" and don't like interacting with people that much, so I usually do a combination of Googling for solutions and experimentation in a stepwise fashion while backing up at each stage in case something goes FUBAR, so I really don't know if they have a forum or not, as I did not look for one).

Thanks that is a big help. I am going to give Mate a try. Honestly I think I have been on forums maybe once or twice before and never for Gnome issues. I am not one to really play with my os too much though. It looks like Mate is in the Debian and ubuntu repositories.
