Post subject: Installer doesn't see empty partitions?  PostPosted: 12.08.2011, 14:11

I recently installed aptosid-2011-02-imera-xfce-amd64-201107131632.iso on a new laptop and encountered some odd behavior with the installer.

I booted the cd and then went into a shell to clear the drive. It had windows 7 on it so I used cfdisk to delete all the partitions, then added 4 primary partitions.

When I started the installer, the drop-down list for root partition and the list of partitions were both empty - there was no way to install. So I quit the installer and formatted sda1 manually with ext3. Then when I restarted the installer it saw the formatted partition (but still didn't list the other three). Installation worked okay.

So in my case it seemed to have trouble seeing unformatted partitions.

This is how it behaves, it only offers filesystems. If you use the gui partitioning tool from the installer it wants to format partitions by default which would stop this confusing people.

Now what does this mean?

Maybe I shall know in a day or two when I install aptosid on the incoming new laptop for my daughter.

At some point, someone thought he should write a detailed description of the installation: the steps before, after and in the middle of it. Basically everything you want to know and even a lot of the stuff you don't. It was so long that it deserved it's own place on the internet. But he kept this place a secret. And everyone who found it by accident was arrested and forced to work on improving this process even further.

This worked so well that even now that the description is so large that it can't be hidden anymore it is still perfectly hidden because nobody expects it to be here. Really, opensource software can't be document. Can it?

In case you wonder: The slaves are labeled with "Team member" here, the "he" is the mighty bluewater and therefore i obviously talked about the fine bluewater manual… but no, i can't tell you were you can find it. That is top-secret… *pssst*
